KUNDALINI YOGA FOR ALL AGES
|
| Beverly Spicer, Austin TX |
Kundalini Yoga is known as the "Yoga of Awareness." It is the oldest known form of yoga, and incorporates elements of Hatha (movement and postures), Bhakti (devotional) and Raja (royal) Yoga. Kundalini energy refers to an energy that resides at the base of the spine and is generally in an unawakened state. The practice of Kundalini Yoga intends to release that energy, moving it upward along the spine, making it available to the whole nervous system, and, hence, helping the entire being to experience maximum energy, health, strength, flexibility, and the contentment and peace of deep inner and outer awareness. This yoga focuses on postures to increase strength, flexibility and endurance in the physical realm, using the breath to increase the flow of oxygen through the blood. As disciplined movement and pranayama (the breath) bathe the tissues in fresh, oxygenated blood, the cells of the body are refreshed and invigorated, increasing overall fitness and energy. Kundalini Yoga also involves the practice of meditation, chanting and teaches deep relaxation techniques. As the body, breath and mind come under conscious control, the body, in a paradoxical state of heightened energy and increased relaxation, can support the mind which then naturally turns to both inner and universal awareness.
This yoga is for persons of all ages, currently ranging from age 28 to 78. Older individuals find the practice of yoga particularly relaxing and invigorating, and are benefited from the noticeable increase of their strength, flexibility and, most especially, balance.
